Bina Foundation for people with special needs was started by Lady Ifeoma C. Atuegwu in 2010 as a non-profit charitable organization to systematically and institutionally cater for people with special needs. Prior to the formation of the foundation, Lady Atuegwu had engaged in philanthropic and charity works, albeit, in a general, unsystematic and informal manner. Although her philanthropic activities positively touched the lives of many physically and mentally challenged persons, the blind and visually impaired, orphans and motherless babies, the widows, and the elderly, the reach was not as extensive as she would have wished.
Therefore, the formation of Bina Foundation was epochal as it represented the formalization and institutionalization of these efforts with a view to ensuring the sustainability and expansion of assistance to the targeted beneficiaries on a continuing basis. The driving force of Bina Foundation for people with special needs is the aspiration to alleviate the stigmatization, marginalization and neglect suffered by a cross-section of people with special needs in the face of seeming government incapacity and / or nonchalance.
